Chimera Linux gains experimental support for NVIDIA graphics cards

The Chimera Linux project has achieved experimental progress running proprietary NVIDIA drivers on its musl distribution.

Learn how developers overcame glibc dependencies using GLVND, gcompat, patchelf, and a patched musl package for the 580 and 620 series.

Until now, NVIDIA's proprietary drivers couldn't work properly on this system because they were built for a different type of base software. Existing open source alternatives were significantly slower in speed and performance, especially on older hardware.

New test packages for NVIDIA cards

The creators of Chimera Linux managed to get NVIDIA's official programs working, offering test packages for the 580 and 620 driver series. The effort concerns computers with x86_64 and AArch64 processors, although the latter category has been tested less.

To overcome the technical hurdles, the developers used special compatibility tools and modified the required components so that the two sides could communicate properly. Among other things, they created a customized version of the base software and a separate library to handle synchronization functions.

In the tests conducted, the 580 driver was successfully tested with a GeForce GTX 980 Ti card, while the 620 driver worked on an RTX 3070 Ti.

It remains in the experimental stage.

Despite the positive results, the support remains experimental. Officials note that additional testing on different hardware and improvements to the packages are needed before the feature is considered ready for widespread use by the public.
