We are looking at the 3rd Gen Amazon Echo Show 5.
This hardware refresh brings a faster processor and a slightly larger speaker to the compact smart display form factor while retaining the 5.5-inch 960x480 touchscreen.
We examine its capabilities as an Alexa-integrated smart home hub, its support for the Matter protocol, and its utility for media streaming and basic video communications.
The touchscreen is 5,5 inches in size and has the same resolution as the previous generation, 960 × 480 pixels. You can control the device with your voice or by touching the screen. Alexa provides weather and sports information, keeps reminders and lists, and controls compatible smart home devices. The Echo Show 5 also supports the Matter smart home platform.
The device plays music, podcasts, and audiobooks from services like Amazon Music, Apple Music, Pandora, SiriusXM, Spotify, and Tidal. It can also play videos from Amazon Prime Video and Hulu, or display photos from Amazon Photos and images from Amazon's art and travel collections.
Drop In lets you make audio or video calls to friends and family who have an Echo device or the Alexa app on their phone. The Echo Show 5 does not support Zoom. The app works on the Echo Show 8 and larger Amazon smart displays.

The 2-megapixel camera is the same as the previous model. It's good enough for video calls, but its image is more blurry and grainy than the Echo Show 8's.
In testing, the microphones correctly recognized voices from across the apartment, even with the TV on. They were not accidentally activated by other sounds.
Voices and podcasts sound loud and clear. Deep bass in music, however, is weak, especially at high volumes. Reviewers prefer the $129,99 Amazon Echo Show 8 because it has a better display, dual speakers, and a higher-resolution camera. Still, the Echo Show 5 remains a good choice for anyone who wants a small smart display with Alexa.
