Deezer gives users the ability to make AI songs disappear

Deezer has rolled out a user toggle to filter out AI-generated tracks from search and recommendations.

The platform utilizes audio artifact detection to identify neural network output, having flagged over 42 million synthetic tracks as upload volumes continue to scale.

The move comes about a year after the service began identifying machine-generated music and removing it from playlists and recommendations. To date, Deezer has identified more than 42 million such tracks, and it shares its detection technology with its music partners. The special tool it uses is based on recognizing specific marks that artificial intelligence systems leave in the audio.

The huge rise of automated music

Computer-generated songs have taken over streaming services. Last April, it was revealed that nearly 75.000 such tracks were being uploaded every day, which equates to about 2 million new songs a month, or 44% of all uploads. By July, that figure had surpassed 50% of new music uploads for the first time.

Despite their huge volume, songs that are entirely synthetic represent 1% to 3% of the platform's total audience. However, it is estimated that 85% of the listening of such tracks was associated with deceptive practices and fraud surrounding broadcasting rights.

Slight slowdown and the movements of other companies

In recent weeks, Deezer has seen a slight decrease in the rate of new uploads. This development is attributed to the fact that a popular music production service has limited free song downloads for its users.

Meanwhile, other well-known platforms are taking different paths. Spotify has added special verification signals to distinguish human voices, promised labeling for AI profiles, and introduced personalized computer-generated podcasts. Apple Music is expected to start labeling AI songs later this year.
