Dell's new 14S (DS14270) budget laptop starts at $649 with an Intel Core 5 320, 8GB of soldered memory, and 256GB of removable storage.
We break down the hardware specifications, upgrade pricing tiers, port selections, and performance benchmarks.
Why the cheaper version is especially worth it
The $649 base model has an Intel Core 5 320 processor, 8GB of memory, and 256GB of storage. Its display is simple, with a resolution of 1.920 by 1.200, a refresh rate of 60Hz, and no touch capability. For everyday surfing and office use, it's fine. The problem starts when you think about upgrading its features.
If you want more memory than 16GB, Dell forces you to get a more powerful processor and better Wi-Fi 6E wireless connectivity, which pushes the price up to $1.099. That price completely takes it out of the budget laptop category. The same goes for other options, as upgrading the storage costs an additional $100 for 512GB and $300 for 1TB, while a better display adds another $100. Note, however, that the internal storage is replaceable, but the memory is soldered to the motherboard and cannot be changed.
Appearance and connectivity
Externally, the laptop features a three-piece aluminum construction and comes in four colors: Linen, Dusty Rose, Washed Denim, and Velvet Green. It is 1,3 centimeters thick and weighs about 1,15 kilograms, which makes it comfortable to carry.

There are limitations to the ports, though. It has two 10Gbps USB-C ports, an HDMI output, and an audio jack, but no traditional full-size USB ports. The HDMI port is also an older version, which limits connection to 4K displays at 24Hz. Wireless connectivity is limited to Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3, and there are no fingerprint or facial recognition security features.
Battery autonomy
One of the system's positives is its battery. In video playback tests with the brightness at 50%, the device reached 22 hours of autonomy, a performance that means it can withstand long hours of use without charging.
