A new demonstration shows the PS5 version of Quake II running on an Xbox Series X via PS5X, a custom port built on the open-source KytyPS5 emulator.

Operating within Xbox Developer Mode, the tool translates Vulkan graphics commands to DirectX and handles shader recompilation, successfully booting four PS5 titles.

Developer Devran Cosmo Uenal posted a video on September 8 showing the PlayStation 5 version of Quake II being played on an Xbox Series X with the console's controller. The program used is called PS5X and is based on an open-source PC emulator called KytyPS5. So far, the program has managed to open four games, with Quake II running at 25 to 45 frames per second and some games having normal sound.

The limitations and technology behind the project

The program only works when the console is in official developer mode. In this mode, Microsoft allows programs to use up to 5 gigabytes of memory, which rules out the vast majority of today's games that require more space. There is currently no publicly available version of the program for anyone to download.

Because both consoles use similar core components, the emulator works by translating graphics commands. However, since the Xbox doesn't support the systems used by the original emulator, it requires additional command conversion, a process in which the creator admitted to using artificial intelligence.

The creator describes PS5X as a research project and says it does not contain any PlayStation system files or decryption keys. At the same time, cunning people are exploiting the situation by releasing dangerous programs with similar names, such as PCS5X, to trick those looking for the relevant files.
