Super Mario 64 has been ported natively to Microsoft's 2009 Zune HD media player using the unofficial OpenZDK kit and sm64ex base.
Explore how the project leverages the device's Nvidia Tegra chip to run with touch controls and audio.
The port was based on OpenZDK, an unofficial development tool that exploits an older technical gap in the device for community-based app creation. The screen features digital touch buttons for controlling the game. According to available information, the game runs at almost full speed, has normal sound, is responsive to touch, and supports saving progress. However, it does not include the game file and requires you to extract it from your own cartridge.
The Zune HD featured a 3,3-inch OLED display and an Nvidia Tegra APX 2600 chip. The device's original price ranged from $219,99 to $289,99 depending on capacity. Microsoft discontinued the device in 2011.
