Foldable displays use flexible layers instead of ordinary rigid glass, and their inner screens usually come with a built-in protector.
This article explains why adding an unapproved layer can damage the display, how Samsung and Apple handle replacement, and why the outer and inner screens need different care.
The internal screen doesn't have the rigid glass of a regular phone screen. It's made up of flexible layers to withstand the repeated folding of the device. The original protector sits on top of these layers.
Samsung's foldable Galaxy phones have a built-in screen protector. The same goes for the iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable phone, which was recently announced. According to the report, the iPhone Duo's screen protector gives the screen a matte finish and makes the crease less visible.
When the first Galaxy Fold was released, some users removed the screen protector and then started experiencing issues with their screen. Samsung has warned users not to remove it themselves. Samsung and Apple are offering replacements, but they have the right tools for the job. If the inner screen protector is damaged, take it to an authorized repair center.
Some companies also sell additional protectors for internal screens, usually less than 0,1mm thick. However, manufacturers warn that an unapproved protector can damage the entire screen.
The outer screen is covered with rigid glass. You can put a screen protector on it, just like you would on a regular phone.
The dust and the hinge
Small particles of dust or sand can damage the hinge. If they get trapped inside the device, they can also scratch the screen.
The newer Galaxy Z Fold is IP48 certified. This means it can withstand brief submersion in water and is protected from particles larger than 1mm, but it's not fully sealed. The iPhone Duo is IP68 certified, which means it's dust-proof and can withstand submersion in water. The durability of devices isn't permanent, and it remains to be seen how the iPhone Duo will hold up over time.
A case that covers the hinge can offer better protection than an additional protector on the internal screen.
