Fake Instagram profiles steal comedians' jokes to promote subscriptions

An investigation into AI-generated social media accounts reveals that synthetic personas are replicating stand-up comedy routines to build massive follower counts.

Discover how platforms are addressing content duplication and synthetic media policies.

The problem came to light when comedian Julia Tsasounas discovered that an Instagram account with 250.000 followers featuring a digitally created woman named Ellen Sky had copied her joke. The account used a video of a woman reciting stand-up comedy material, while the website it was advertising led to adult content.

The extent of the phenomenon

A Wired investigation identified eight comedians whose videos were copied from accounts featuring digital women. Another similar profile, named Tiffany Sloan, amassed over 375.000 followers on Instagram by also posting stolen jokes.

Comedian George Brett Olson discovered in October that Tiffany Sloan had copied his joke and reported it to Meta, which took no action.

The attitude of the platforms

When Julia Tsassounas asked Meta to remove the video, the company responded that the post did not violate the rules because the account was not pretending to be the comedian herself.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, said it is impractical to attempt to completely ban artificially generated content from the platform.

Historically, stand-up comedians' jokes have enjoyed minimal copyright protection due to their oral and temporary nature.
