OpenAI designs humanoid robot with a focus on artificial intelligence

OpenAI is actively building a humanoid robot, with CEO Sam Altman noting that developing the robot's AI brain is more critical than its physical form.

Recruitment is underway for motion control, state estimation, and machine-learning infrastructure, with an initial demo expected by 2027.

In an interview with the Sources podcast, Altman explained that the human form is the most logical choice, because our world is made for people. When asked if the company will eventually build such a robot, he answered in the affirmative. He stressed that the most important thing is to find a way to operate the mind that will direct it, as giving a machine arms and legs is not enough if it does not know what to do with them.

The project is still far from complete. Altman told Fortune that the company expects to have an interesting demonstration in 2027, but it will be several years before robots hit the streets. So far, OpenAI has not revealed details about the demonstration, what the robot will look like, or when anyone outside the company will see it.

The challenge of intelligence

Building a capable robot requires that the machine be able to understand what its sensors see, interpret instructions, make decisions, coordinate its body, and correct its mistakes in action.

The company is already staffing teams on these issues, with job postings covering motion control, state estimation, whole robot behavior, and machine learning infrastructure.

Previously, OpenAI's Dactyl research program had trained a robotic hand to manipulate objects in a simulation, a technique that was later applied to a Rubik's Cube, highlighting the difficulty of matching software theory with reality.

Body construction and goals

The focus on intelligence doesn't mean OpenAI is neglecting the hardware side. Job postings show the company working on mechanical motors, sensor systems, and thermal systems.

The company's immediate goals are to create general-purpose robots that will assist skilled workers in infrastructure construction, while the long-term goal remains the development of a personal robot for the home.

Currently, OpenAI has 27 open robotics jobs, but has not officially announced any ready-made robots, pricing, subscription, release date, or data protection framework.
