FBI blames hackers for record $6,43 billion Binance theft

The FBI has attributed a record 6.43 billion dollar digital asset theft from Binance to North Korea's TraderTraitor group, with 2.85 billion dollars subsequently frozen on-chain by major protocol operators and stablecoin issuers.

The largest cryptocurrency theft in history

The FBI has officially attributed the theft of $6,43 billion in digital assets from the Binance platform to the North Korean hacking group TraderTraitor. This amount is the largest cryptocurrency theft in history, surpassing the $1,46 billion from Bybit. Of the stolen funds, $2,85 billion has already been frozen on-chain by companies Tether, Circle, Ripple, Arbitrum and Optimism.

Security issues in popular services and platforms

The Polymarket platform temporarily suspended trading after an attack on a third-party service, DebugBear, allowed $2,7 million to be removed from 33 wallets. In a separate development, researchers uncovered a now-fixed issue in ChatGPT where a shared link could execute code within a user’s active session.

At the same time, two versions of the Claude Code extension on the Cursor Marketplace contained an SSH backdoor, affecting up to 5.000 users.

Destruction of devices and detection of illegal networks

The US Department of Justice seized the domain of hosting provider Virtualine. Keystone will destroy 18.835 hardware wallets in its inventory after a third-party monitoring tool was compromised on its website. Finally, an automated campaign called Gheist secretly planted workflows on over 13.500 branches from 850 compromised GitHub accounts.
