Formlabs has released the Form Studio 1, a $699 3D printer designed for hobbyists.
The system includes an integrated resin heating component, NFC material recognition, and a remote-monitoring camera.
Crucially, the platform features Open Material Mode, permitting the use of third-party resins alongside the company's own Alpha and Tough series.
Developers and makers can manage models through the PreForm software ecosystem, with support for specific hardware add-ons like a VOC extractor.
Freedom in the use of materials
One of the key features of the new model is the “Open Material Mode”, which allows the use of third-party materials at no additional charge. To take advantage of this feature, users will need to use the “Resin Tank Pro”. The printer supports a range of Formlabs’ own resins, such as Alpha Grey, Alpha Fast, Flexible 80A and Tough 1500. Preparation of models and supports is done through the PreForm software.
Ease of use and accessories
For easy removal of objects after printing, the device features the Flex printing platform. In addition, two optional accessories are available for those who wish to do so:
- Studio Wash+Cure station: A wash and cure station costs $199.
- VOC extractor: A gas extraction system costs $179.
Information about the printer was announced on October 14, 2026.
