Sony ECM-W5: The new wireless microphone system for content creators

Sony has announced the ECM-W5 wireless microphone system, featuring 32-bit float audio capture to prevent signal clipping at the source.

Each transmitter unit includes 64GB of integrated storage, with the system supporting up to four-channel expansion.

The receiver integrates via USB-C or Sony's Multi Interface Shoe, offering touchscreen control for levels and routing.

The hardware is designed for low-latency wireless transmission with an 11-hour battery cycle.

Connectivity and usage

The receiver features a touchscreen for controlling settings and connects to computers or smartphones via a USB-C port. Sony Alpha camera owners have the advantage of being able to attach the receiver directly to their camera's Multi Interface Shoe. In addition, the system allows for wireless audio monitoring using Bluetooth headphones.

Recording quality and capabilities

The ECM-W5 supports 32-bit float technology. This means that the sound is recorded in such a way that distortion is avoided, even if the volume during reception is very high or very low. For additional security, each transmitter has 64GB of internal memory, so that the sound is stored locally in case of a connection problem. In ideal conditions, the connection range can reach 500 meters, while the battery of the transmitters lasts 11 hours.

System expansion

The system is flexible, with the ability to expand to record up to four channels of audio simultaneously. For users who need more equipment, Sony offers separate additional transmitters for $120 and additional receivers for $190.
