ArtCraft has launched open-source AI-based alternatives to Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom named PhotoCraft and LightCraft.
The cross-platform apps replicate standard interfaces and keyboard shortcuts while operating via localized and cloud-assisted AI features.
How the programs were built
ArtCraft founder Brandon Thomas used artificial intelligence and his own knowledge to build PhotoCraft, while a team of volunteers helped create LightCraft. According to a legal expert, reverse engineering software is generally considered legal in the United States as a fair use.
What can they do in practice?
PhotoCraft and LightCraft are available for free on Mac and Windows computers. However, users who want to use AI-powered image and video features must purchase credits, with prices starting at $8 per month.
PhotoCraft manages to cover about 80% to 90% of the features of the original Photoshop. However, it struggles with advanced automatic theme selections and lacks artificial intelligence tools.

Similarly, LightCraft is similar to Lightroom but lacks cloud storage, automated AI tools for sharpening, and lens correction profiles for multiple cameras. Additionally, its noise reduction and grain simulation produce rougher results than Adobe's original program.
