Avi Schiffmann's Friend 2 is a $249 AI-powered wearable pendant running on OpenAI's latest language models.
The device captures nearby audio via a neck-worn form factor and includes a rear speaker for unprompted speech, supporting configurable personas and built-in content restrictions.
The project was created by Avi Schiffmann, who previously became known for creating a surveillance tool during the pandemic. The first generation of the device had caused strong reactions and protests due to an advertising campaign on the New York subway.
How it works and what it can do
The new version is powered by OpenAI’s newest AI models. While the manufacturer initially said the device would have a fixed, unchanging personality, users can eventually log into the app, change the chatbot’s name, and create different personas, including Sage, Nova, Onyx, River, Echo, Willow, and Wren.
The device's conversations are limited to simple chat and have built-in content limits to prevent inappropriate interactions. Unlike the first version, which could become aggressive, the new model features more conservative responses and limited web search capabilities.

Plans for the future
The device's creator announced plans for a future update, under which all users will chat with a single global artificial intelligence entity that shares a common framework, while acknowledging data privacy concerns.
