Android Automotive is an open-source operating system integrated into vehicles, distinct from phone-projection apps such as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

It can run without a phone and connect to vehicle functions including climate control, cameras, lighting and the instrument panel.

Automakers can adapt it to their brands; Google Built-in is a separate app suite added to systems based on Android Automotive.

This is different from Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which display apps from your phone on your car's screen. Neither Android Automotive nor Google Built-in require an Android phone. If you use the same Google account on your phone and car, some features may work better together.

Android Automotive can connect to car features like the radio, climate control, cameras, mirrors, lights, seats, and instrument cluster. Manufacturers can customize the system however they want. For example, Rivian uses this technology in its own system, without displaying the Google brand.

Google Built-in was introduced in 2020. Automakers can add it to their systems so drivers can access, among other things, Google Maps and Google Play, which houses apps like Spotify and YouTube. According to the report, 16 brands offer Google Built-in. These include Honda, Volvo, Chevrolet, Nissan, Ford, BYD and Renault.

Google is replacing Google Assistant with Gemini in its car systems. Gemini can provide traffic updates, suggest routes tailored to electric cars, and help with emails, messages, music playlists, and food orders. With Gemini Live, drivers can chat about their destination. Gemini Live can also use the car's front camera.

Gemini launched earlier this summer in cars with Android Auto and then expanded to brands with Google Built-in, including Honda, Chevrolet, and Volvo. Gemini can also help change settings and provide information about the car's battery or performance.

Ford and Rivian are developing their own AI assistants. GM is reportedly planning to add Gemini to its own Google Built-in system, while also preparing its own in-car assistant. The latter is expected to launch later in 2026. GM has been using Google Built-in since 2023.

GM's Anna Santos said the company's assistant will leverage its knowledge of its cars and OnStar capabilities to offer more than a general-purpose assistant.

Some customers are concerned that embedded systems could lead to subscriptions or the sale of driving data. These are customer concerns, not confirmed practices.
