Google launches Googlebooks with prices starting at $900

Google introduced Googlebooks, a new laptop category spanning five hardware partners—Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo—running Googlebook OS, which benchmarks identify as Android 17.

Explore the desktop interface, Cross-Device Services integration, and Gemini Intelligence features.

How the new system works

The devices run Googlebook OS, an operating system that benchmarking applications identify as Android 17. The interface resembles a traditional PC and features system-wide search, a status bar, customizable widgets, and improved file management compared to Chromebooks.

Connection with mobile phones and applications

Through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, users can connect an Android phone to sync notifications, access mobile storage, and continue reading web pages or documents on another device. There is also the ability to operate mobile apps directly from the computer, although heavy programs and games experience noticeable lag.

Built-in artificial intelligence

Each computer comes pre-installed with Gemini artificial intelligence technology, which offers tools such as a cursor-based search function, a speech-to-text tool, and the ability to create custom desktop widgets.

Who are the new devices for?

Early tests show that Googlebooks' capabilities are limited beyond basic tasks, which makes them appealing mainly to dedicated Android and Google fans.
