A firmware update bug is causing Google Home speakers to download massive amounts of data, with some devices consuming terabytes due to repeatedly failing loops.
Google states a fix is rolling out, and users can monitor router statistics to check for unusual bandwidth consumption.
The issue was first reported by 9to5Google on October 19, 2026, and was followed by numerous reports from users on Reddit. According to them, the company's newest speaker model may be the one most affected.
In one test, one device consumed 17 gigabytes over a 24-hour period. The largest known user report on Reddit shows a speaker consuming 3,3 terabytes over the past month, mostly since October. Other cases include a device that attempted to download 140 gigabytes in one night, as well as other devices in the same home consuming 81,7 and 65,3 gigabytes.
What Google responded and how you can protect yourself
Google said that a solution is already starting to be made available to users to address the problem, but did not specify when it will reach everyone.
