Cyberattacks targeting internet-connected commercial refrigeration units across Europe forced controllers into defrost mode, causing food spoilage in multiple countries.
Security researchers highlighted that the affected units lacked ongoing security updates following prior industry warnings.
The attacks raised the temperature in refrigeration units and destroyed products in parts of Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg and Sweden. Major supermarket companies such as Ahold Delhaize and Colruyt confirmed the incidents. A company in Belgium that manages Delhaize's systems said that the unknown people changed the settings of the devices to start defrosting.
Previous incidents and warnings
The new wave follows similar attacks last month in France, where hundreds of stores saw their food spoil because temperatures were deliberately raised. Security researchers say the focus is on internet-connected refrigerators made by Danish company Danfoss, which no longer provides security updates for them.
In fact, cybersecurity company Claroty had warned since August that these units were at risk of remote compromise and disruption to their operations.
Research in the United States
Meanwhile, in the United States, Defense Department officials are investigating the possibility that refrigerators at military bases have been targeted by similar attacks by hacker groups linked to Iran.
