How difficult has funding become for new tech companies?

At TechCrunch Disrupt, venture partners from Peak XV, Index Ventures, and Bessemer discussed the current challenges of Series A fundraising, market dysfunctions, split tranches, and shifts in capital toward defense, robotics, and AI infrastructure.

Investors Shailendra Singh of Peak XV, Jahanvi Sardana of Index Ventures, and Janelle Teng Wade of Bessemer explained what they look for in founders’ proposals and the pitfalls of the current period. According to Singh, the current market situation is one of the most dysfunctional he has seen, with the demands of the top capital firms being particularly high.

Market excess and division in agreements

The difficulty in finding money is also reflected in the way funding rounds are now being closed. As Singh noted, it’s common to see a company trying to close a round by negotiating as many as three different prices at once. Sardana coined the term “tranchopalooza” to describe the phenomenon where funding is being pushed into separate tranches.

At the same time, investors have pointed out that inflated revenue numbers are common. Singh warned founders to avoid using cumulative revenue graphs, calling them a big problem, and stressed the need for complete honesty.

What are investors looking for?

According to Teng Wade, funds are being directed to areas such as defense, robotics and artificial intelligence infrastructure. Companies developing basic models are turning towards vertical integration.

Turning to financials, Teng Wade noted that metrics are less standardized today, especially in the AI space where costs are very high. She cited Anthropic as an example, which is reportedly preparing to go public at a valuation of around $2 trillion and has told investors it is profitable on an adjusted basis.

In closing, investors offered their own advice to founders. Singh warned that a market correction could come as early as 2027. Teng Wade urged founders to be bold in the amounts they ask for and adjust accordingly.
