A technical breakdown of Apple's foldable iPhone Duo, covering its $1,999 starting price, dual 48-megapixel camera setup, and hardware feature trade-offs compared to the iPhone 18 Pro.
Fewer cameras and shorter zoom range
The iPhone Duo has two rear cameras, one main and one ultra-wide that also covers close-up shots. However, Apple has not included the dedicated zoom camera that the iPhone 18 Pro has.
The Duo offers 2x optical zoom. The iPhone 18 Pro, on the other hand, has a separate 4x zoom camera and 8x zoom capability. The iPhone Duo is limited to 2x zoom, which means it doesn't have the same flexibility for distant subjects.
The lack of advanced settings and lens
Another difference is that the Duo does not have a variable aperture lens, which is present on the iPhone 18 Pro for better control of light.
Additionally, the iPhone Duo doesn't offer professional options like manual camera settings or the ability to shoot in special high-res formats. It also lacks the older version of image stabilization compared to the iPhone 18 Pro, non-adaptive flash, and the ability to capture 3D photos and videos, as well as the Reference Image feature.
The possibilities of foldable design
Despite the camera limitations, the foldable design offers unique capabilities. The phone has a camera on the outer screen and a hidden camera under the inner folding screen.
The external display can be used as a preview window for the rear cameras. There are also special software features, such as Smart Take that automatically takes group photos when everyone is ready, Kid Cue with Peanuts cartoons on the external display for kids, and Duo FaceTime that lets people join in from the external display.
