How PCMag Tests and Reviews Desktop Computer Cases

PCMag details its standardized hardware methodology for testing PC chassis, outlining specific processor, GPU, cooling, and acoustic measurement setups.

The components used in the tests

To make the tests fair and repeatable, the exact same group of components is always used in each box:

  • Processor: Intel Core i7-13700K with locked operating frequency.
  • Graphics card: PNY GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Verto.
  • Motherboards: Asus ROG Maximus Z790 Dark Hero, Prime Z790M-Plus or ROG Strix Z790-I Gaming WiFi, depending on the size of the box.
  • Boot disk: MSI Space M470 1TB M.2.
  • Power supplies: Cooler Master GX III Gold 850 for full-size systems and V 1100 SFX Platinum for smaller ones.
  • Processor cooling system: Corsair iCue H100i RGB Pro XT water cooling.

How temperature and noise tests are performed

During testing, systems are pushed to the max for a full hour using Prime95 and FurMark programs to raise processor and graphics card temperatures.

To measure noise, a special sound level meter (Galaxy Audio CheckMate CM-140) is used at a distance of 0,25 meters, with the final value converted to correspond to a distance of one meter. In this way, when the thermal performance is similar between different boxes, the details on noise, materials and build quality help buyers decide which one best suits their needs.
