How to control what Chrome and your Google account record

Chrome collects activity data and browsing history through a Google account, with controls split between Chrome settings and Google Account tools.

This guide covers options for activity history, personalised ads, cookies and browser safety.

It also explains a key limitation: Do Not Track is only a request, and websites can ignore it.

Privacy control

In the “Privacy and security” menu in Chrome’s settings, you can block third-party cookies and enable the “Do Not Track” option. The latter sends websites a request not to track you, but they can ignore it.

To change other tracking settings, go to “Manage your Google Account.” There you can turn off tracking of your web and app activity, Timeline, and search personalization. You can also turn off personalized ads from “My Ad Center.”

Tools for greater security

Chrome automatically runs “Safety Check” in the background. The tool detects security issues, needed updates, and passwords you use across multiple services.

In the Safe Browsing section, you can choose between different levels of protection against dangerous websites and downloads. Chrome also uses Gemini Nano to protect against fraud. If you enable the Always use secure connections option, you will receive a warning when you visit a website that does not use a secure connection.

Google updates Chrome every two weeks to better deal with threats.
