How to easily free up storage space on your Android phone

Explore practical methods for managing storage on Android devices, including app archiving mechanisms that strip core binaries while preserving user state, cache management, and automated cleanup tools.

In addition to photos and videos, there are apps and files that take up space without you realizing it. But there are simple ways to find out exactly what's filling up your device and effectively delete it.

What to do with apps you don't use

The easiest way to free up space is to delete apps you no longer need. You can see which programs are taking up the most space by going to your device's settings, device care, storage, and apps, where you can simply delete them.

If you don't want to lose your data, there is the option to archive. This process removes the core program files and temporary data, but your login details and personal settings remain saved.

Android and the app store also have an automatic archiving feature for apps you don't use often. According to Google, this feature can free up about 60 percent of the space an app takes up, without deleting its presence or your personal data.

Photo and video management

Media files are one of the biggest memory hogs. You can manage them through your device's gallery or back them up using Google Photos.

Google accounts offer up to 15 gigabytes of free cloud storage, which is shared between Photos, Drive, Gmail, and other services. If you need more space, Google One subscriptions are available for $2 per month for 100 gigabytes or $3 per month for 200 gigabytes.

Once your files are safely stored in the cloud, you can delete the copies from your device to free up space. In your device's storage settings, you can also enable smart storage to automatically clean up photos already stored online.

Clearing temporary data and other files

Besides apps and photos, there are many other files that take up memory. In your device settings, device care, and storage, you can check for duplicate and large files that can be deleted.

Also, clearing temporary data in video-watching and social networking apps can free up gigabytes of space. It's a good idea to regularly check and empty the trash bin found in your device's settings, device care, and storage.
