How to stop tracking and ads on your smart TV

Developers are exploring specialized tools like CleanYourTV, Projectivity Launcher, and DumbTV to strip tracking and ads from modern smart TV platforms.

Learn how these tools tackle automated content recognition and data collection.

Disable automatic content recognition

This feature tracks what the user watches and collects data for targeted advertising campaigns. On Amazon-powered TVs, for example, you can go to your preferences and privacy settings to disable it, along with the usage data collection options.

Turning off the microphone

More advanced TVs have built-in microphones for using digital voice assistants. The user can disable the continuous listening feature through the settings menu. In addition, many TVs have a physical mute switch on the bottom of the device or the microphone points can be covered with insulating tape.

Disconnect from the internet and use an external device

A TV can function normally without being connected to the home Wi-Fi network. Disconnecting it from the internet stops it from sending data, while the user can view content by connecting a separate media display device via HDMI, such as a Roku device or disc player.

Factory reset

For added peace of mind, the TV can be reset to its original state to clear any stored network data. During the new setup process, the user can simply skip the Wi-Fi connection and use the device exclusively through the HDMI ports.
