An overview of the Google Fitbit Air specifications, detailing its IP68 and 5 ATM water resistance ratings, design choices, and maintenance guidelines regarding temperature and chemical exposure limits.
The difference between a waterproof device and one that's simply water-resistant is significant. According to its specifications, the Fitbit Air is certified to withstand being submerged in water more than one meter deep for up to an hour, as well as being pressure-resistant to a depth of up to 50 meters.
This means you can normally swim with it or sweat during your workout. However, Google recommends taking it off when going to a hot tub, sauna, or shower, as excessive heat and soaps can cause damage.
Its water resistance may decrease over time if exposed to perfumes, lotions, insect repellents, or high-pressure water jets, as these materials wear down the device's protective materials and adhesives. Also, drops can damage the frame and affect water resistance.
