Vercel's AI Gateway data reveals rapid adoption for Jev, a lightweight model by Typesafe AI designed for fast and cost-effective data classification using predefined outputs.

Within two weeks of its release, Jev was adopted by 35% of paid teams, nearly doubling the usage of Sonnet 5.5.

Vercel published the data on October 15, 2026. Jev was released in limited release on September 15. It is designed to choose from a small number of predefined answers, which makes it faster and cheaper than alternatives such as Sonnet 5.5. This makes it suitable for quickly classifying large amounts of data. This approach has attracted interest and led to competing proposals from companies such as OpenAI and Amazon.

The data comes from AI Gateway, Vercel’s service that aggregates usage across different models. It doesn’t show the entire market and may show less usage than companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, which have their own services. Vercel was an early adopter of Jev and chose it over GPT-6 Luna to classify potentially harmful commands.

The data also shows that open source models account for over 70% of the word processing units Vercel’s service records, but for almost 25% of the total spending. Spending on models from leading AI companies has increased tenfold, even though these models account for a smaller share of total spending. It is possible that the leading models and open source alternatives serve different needs, rather than directly competing.
