Linux 7.3 mainline kernel is officially out, packing 18,765 commits from over 3,000 developers.
Discover what's new, including Valve-contributed VRAM management for AMD GPUs, Ext4 I/O performance boosts, Apple M3 initial chip support, and new hardware drivers.
Better memory management for graphics cards
One of the biggest changes is to AMD's graphics. When a graphics card has limited memory, the system can now temporarily remove background data to improve gaming performance. This change was contributed by Natalie Vock from Valve, who tested it with the game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. At the same time, older processors can now use basic instructions without requiring newer support.
Faster file management and processor
The way the computer divides processor time between applications has a new default mode that reduces lag and improves responsiveness. In addition, the basic file system shows significant speed increases when writing and reading data in parallel, and basic support for additional file data in Windows disk formats is added.
Support for new hardware and devices
The new version adds support for a number of modern devices. These include the 2026 Steam Controller, the MSI Claw controller, as well as microphones and other equipment.
