India's Department of Telecommunications has issued a directive requiring telecom service providers to implement the Calling Name Presentation service, displaying registered subscriber names alongside incoming numbers on 4G and newer networks starting November 1, 2026.
The Ministry of Communications issued a circular for the implementation of the new system, which targets modern 4G mobile networks and newer generations. The extension of the measure to older 2G and 3G networks, as well as traditional landline phones, will be examined and planned separately next year.
How the data will appear on the screen
When someone receives a call, the screen will show the phone number in the first position. The name will be displayed in the second position, following specific rules:
- If the number is saved in contacts, the name the user has saved will be displayed.
- If the number is not saved, the name from the database for domestic calls will be displayed.
- If the call is made from abroad, the indication "International Call" will be displayed.
The telephone companies that initiate the call are required to create and maintain a database that links the names of subscribers to their numbers. At the same time, providers should offer users the ability to hide their identity, while they are required to follow a security design so that the name is not stored after the call ends, while maintaining the quality of services.

What applies to businesses?
Business connections can choose a "preferred name" to be displayed instead of their regular name. This name must be either a registered trademark or a trade name registered on the official goods and services portal.
For new professional connections, the presentation of original documents and exact copies of the registration is required, which will be attached to the client's application.
