Developer maximedgoulet has released FoveatedDLSS5, an open-source mod integrating foveated rendering into the DLSS 5 pipeline.
By scaling down peripheral resolution while keeping the screen center sharp, testing on an RTX 4090 showed performance gains up to 63%.
The modification, called FoveatedDLSS5, was created by independent developer maximedgoulet and is based on another add-on called RenoDX DLSS 5 for ReShade. The idea is based on a technique most commonly used in virtual reality: the image is rendered at maximum resolution in the center of the screen, while the resolution gradually decreases towards the edges.
In this new modification, the focus point remains fixed in the center of the screen and does not follow eye movement. This way, the DLSS 5 AI system processes fewer lighting and color details, reducing the load on the graphics card.
The test results
In a test run on The Witcher 3 using an RTX 4090 graphics card, performance was improved by up to 63%. Without the mod, the game ran at 49 frames per second with DLSS 5, while with the mod, the speed reached an average of 80 frames per second.

The creator states that the drop in quality at the edges of the final image is very difficult to perceive with the eye during gameplay.
Where it can be useful
The modification may prove particularly useful for users experimenting with older, unsupported graphics cards to run DLSS 5.
Officially, Nvidia has only approved DLSS 5 for a handful of games and only on its newest RTX 50-series graphics cards. However, various modifications allow the technology to work on older hardware, such as RTX 40 and RTX 30-series cards, as well as some AMD cards.
