The mpv 0.42 update introduces significant improvements for media playback, including native DVD/Blu-ray menu navigation (HDMV and BD-J) and automated ISO mounting.
Network streaming is now more robust with HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 support, alongside default TLS certificate verification.
Developers should note that this build requires FFmpeg 6.1 and libplacebo 7.387.0.
Additional features include a configurable context menu and expanded HDR/Dolby Vision Profile 7 support.
Easier playback of discs and files
The program has gained the ability to navigate DVD and Blu-ray menus, just like on a classic player. In addition, mpv now automatically recognizes and opens ISO files, and support for playing DVD-Audio discs has been added.
Improvements in appearance and control
The user experience has been upgraded with two new additions:
- Right-click menu: Users can now use a customizable menu that appears with the right mouse button.
- New control buttons: The buttons that appear on the screen during viewing have taken on a more modern look.
Upgrades for internet and image quality
For those watching videos over the internet, network playback has become faster and more stable, thanks to support for new connection technologies. In the area of image, performance has been improved for high definition video (HDR) and Dolby Vision, while support for SRV3 subtitles has been added.
Security and technical fixes
The program is now more secure, as it automatically verifies the identity of websites (digital certificates) when logging in. Also, issues affecting the program's stability in Linux environments (such as PipeWire, ALSA, and Wayland) have been fixed.
Note on upgrade
If you plan to upgrade the program, please note that version 0.42 requires newer versions of some core system utilities (specifically FFmpeg 6.1 and libplacebo 7.387.0) to function properly.
