New Ubuntu 26.10 released with Snapdragon support and new GNOME

Canonical has launched Ubuntu 26.10 Stonking Stingray, an interim release supported through July 2027.

Powered by Linux kernel 7.3 and Mesa 26.2, it introduces Snapdragon X Elite hardware support, GNOME 51, systemd 261, and dbus-broker.

Developers benefit from Rust 1.97.1, OpenJDK 27, and continued migration of core command-line utilities to Rust.

On the desktop, the new Ubuntu brings the GNOME 51 environment. Users will notice smoother gestures, better multi-monitor management, and automatic screen rotation on supported devices.

The revamped app store now features a single page for available programs, as well as a dedicated section for easily managing NVIDIA graphics card drivers. Inside the system, the Linux kernel has been updated to version 7.3, bringing support for laptops with Snapdragon X Elite and X2 Elite processors.

Significant changes were also made to the system backend, as the transition of basic command line commands to new code was completed, the traditional process communication mechanism was replaced with dbus-broker, and systemd was updated to version 261. At the same time, OpenSSL 4 was integrated with support for hiding login credentials.
