Nvidia brings new lighter mode for higher frame rates in games

Nvidia introduced a new Preset C performance mode for its frame-generation technology in the Nvidia app beta, replacing part of the AI pipeline with a lighter-weight algorithm to increase frame rates and reduce native rendering overhead.

The new option, known as Preset C, is based on a different method that is lighter on the computer compared to the previous AI system. This change allows for higher refresh rates on the screen, while reducing the strain on the system during normal graphics processing.

How the technology works

The frame generation technology uses two artificial intelligence systems to add extra images between those normally calculated by the computer. The first system processes game data using motion and depth information. The second system, which analyzes game menus and lighting, has been replaced in this new version by Nvidia.

Test results

In internal testing conducted by Nvidia using a PC with an RTX 5060 8GB graphics card, 64GB DDR5 memory, and a 9800X3D processor in the game Cyberpunk 2077 with medium lighting settings and balanced mode, speed and performance were noticeably improved:

  • Frame doubling: The speed reached 132 frames per second, up from 120 with the original method.
  • Quadruple frame: The speed increased from 197 to 244 frames per second.
  • Frame multiplication: The speed reached 348 frames per second, up from 255.

The company states that the lighter method may slightly affect optical quality, but the effect is limited to minimal visual differences.

How to enable the new feature

Users who want to try the feature can follow these steps:

  1. They download the trial version of the Nvidia application.
  2. They go to the settings and the section about the app to enable experimental features.
  3. They go to the graphics section, select the desired frame generation level, and then go to the driver settings, to the adjustment option for frame generation.
  4. They select Preset C and press save.
