On Samsung Galaxy, two ways to protect apps or limit usage

Samsung Galaxy devices use Secure Folder rather than a simple app-lock option like the iPhone feature described in the guide.

Built on Samsung Knox, it creates a separate encrypted space where apps run as isolated copies with their own data and sign-ins.

The guide covers setup and the behavior of apps when the folder is hidden.

Protect apps with Secure Folder

Secure Folder is based on Samsung Knox, Samsung's security system. It creates a separate space on your phone where your data is stored encrypted. The apps you add there are separate copies, with their own data and login details. For example, you can put banking or messaging apps, private photos, and other personal information.

To set it up, open Settings > Security & privacy > More security settings > Secure Folder and sign in to your Samsung Account. Then, choose a lock method: PIN, password, pattern, or biometrics. To add apps, tap the “+” symbol inside Secure Folder.

During setup, you can choose whether apps run in the background when the folder is closed. You can also hide the folder from the home screen via the quick panel. When it's hidden, its apps don't run in the background and don't send notifications. To use them, you must first unhide the folder.

Restrict usage with app pinning

Pinning temporarily restricts phone usage to a single app. For example, you can let a child play a game without being able to open other apps. This option does not encrypt data.

To turn it on, go to Settings > Security & privacy > More security settings and turn on Allow apps to be pinned . Open the app you want the other person to use. Tap Recents or, if you're using gestures, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold. Then tap the icon above the app and choose Pin this app or Pin to screen.

To unpin the app, press and hold Recents and Back at the same time . The screen displays instructions when you tap the buttons at the bottom. Pinning is best suited for children who can't read these instructions yet.
