Opera introduced WebAI, a new browser standard enabling developers and users to run open-weight AI models locally—including Google Gemma and Apple on-device models—without cloud dependencies.
Available in Opera One preview.
How WebAI works
The new standard is called WebAI and is designed to work with a variety of artificial intelligence models. According to the company, it supports Google's Gemma model, as well as Apple's built-in model on Mac computers, and can work with a wide range of similar systems.
The feature is initially available as a beta option in the main Opera One browser. The company announced that the feature will soon be added to Opera GX and Opera Neon browsers. Users must choose to enable the feature themselves.
The advantages and limitations
Running AI on the device offers privacy benefits, as users' data remains on their device and is not sent to corporate services. WebAI enables text generation, content classification, and information understanding directly in the browser.

On the other hand, local operation puts more strain on the computer. Performance directly depends on the hardware components and capabilities of the device in question.
