Player fixed Oblivion Remastered's crashes with artificial intelligence

A developer used Anthropic's Claude AI to analyze Unreal Engine source code for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, discovering a redundant lighting reconstruction bottleneck.

Read how the resulting mod delivers over 40 performance improvements.

The official re-release of the game had disappointed many players, garnering mediocre to negative reviews on Steam due to bugs and poor performance. Many even felt that the creators had abandoned it after its release in 2025. Faced with this situation, a Reddit user named LTSharpe decided to intervene.

How artificial intelligence helped

Using Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 AI model, the developer analyzed the game's performance issues and code. The AI found that the game was recalculating scene lighting on every single frame, even when the image wasn't changing at all, causing a huge load on the processor.

The process lasted a few weeks and led to the discovery of more than 40 improvements.

The solution and the results

The fix, dubbed OblivionRemasteredPerformanceFix, promises to increase open-world exploration speeds by up to 40%, while also ensuring a stable 60 frames per second performance even in the game's bustling cities.

Additionally, the add-on supports AMD’s latest image enhancement technology and fixes several older bugs in the code. The creator, who has been playing the game since its original release in 2006, tested the solution on a PC with an RX 9070 XT graphics card and 32 gigabytes of RAM. The file is now publicly available on GitHub for players who want to try it out.
