SpaceX has put its plans for a standalone Starlink retail store in Bakersfield, California, on hold following an inactive business license in June.
Previous pilot locations in Nebraska and South Dakota have also closed, as SpaceX shifts its retail strategy toward partnerships with authorized vendors like Best Buy and Boost Mobile.
Plans to open a store in Bakersfield, California, have been on hold since its business license expired in June. Meanwhile, the four physical stores that SpaceX opened in malls in Nebraska and South Dakota late last year have closed. A researcher from Wave7 Research visited the Nebraska store in August and found it had been closed for months, while official listings at the other three malls do not include the company. SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the closed stores.
Instead of dedicated stores, the company is focusing on expanding its presence in partner stores. As of early 2025, products will be available at authorized partners such as Best Buy, Home Depot, and Nebraska Furniture Mart, while billboards have appeared in cities such as Cleveland, Phoenix, and Kansas City.
The presence in other chains' stores varies, as the displays in some Target stores appear to have been removed, while they remain prominently displayed in Best Buy stores. Additionally, since February, Boost Mobile began selling Starlink equipment in 120 stores, later expanding its availability to 2.000 locations.
