Putin calls Elon Musk a genius and reveals they are in close communication

At the Russia-Africa Summit, Vladimir Putin praised SpaceX CEO Elon Musk as a genius and noted ongoing contact regarding Russia's Rassvet satellite project, highlighting the massive scale of Musk's orbital constellation.

The contact between the two sides and the satellite plans

Speaking at the Russia-Africa Summit, Putin referred to the “Rasvet” project, Russia’s answer to Musk’s satellite internet. The Russian president noted that Musk already has more than 5.000 satellites in orbit, while Russia is taking its first steps in this area.

Ukraine's concerns and internet problems

The development comes at a time of tension. Musk recently expressed his displeasure with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Earlier this month, the United States eased sanctions on Russia, raising fears in Ukraine that it could lose access to its satellite network.

These fears were heightened when Ukrainian drones experienced frequent outages for about ten days. According to reports, Musk ordered SpaceX to restrict Ukraine's access, while other reports attributed the order to a White House decision. Musk himself claimed in a post that Ukraine violated the terms of service by using the technology for offensive drone operations aimed at taking human lives.

The current state of the network

Satellite internet in Ukraine appears to have since returned to normal. However, Musk commented in a post that if the network were to be shut down, the Ukrainian front would collapse immediately, clarifying that this is an observation and not a threat.
