Railway platform breach and theft of cryptocurrencies from digital wallets

Railway disclosed unauthorized access to environment variable storage systems, allowing third parties to potentially access encrypted and decrypted sensitive data.

The incident led to cryptocurrency wallet thefts prior to official disclosure, prompting Railway to rotate bucket credentials and API tokens while advising users to rotate stored keys.

According to the company, unknown individuals may have gained access to encrypted data, and in some cases were able to read it decrypted. The issue only affects a group of users, although the company did not disclose the exact number.

What data was affected?

This data includes digital keys and passwords that applications use to operate and connect to other services. Railway believes that the incident is likely part of a series of attacks against technology companies, aimed at breaching companies that provide artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The company notified its providers to proactively revoke keys and prevent any misuse. It also urged its customers to change their data, including keys and passwords, and check their activity history for any unusual actions.

Security researcher Taylor Monahan said the incident allowed attackers to empty digital wallets because their owners had stored their private keys on the platform. The first known theft was recorded at 7:36 p.m., at least two hours before the company officially disclosed the issue.

As a response, Railway changed all access keys to its systems and canceled digital connection traces. At the same time, it restored the app creation function for its professional packages and continues work on the remaining free or trial packages.
