Sam Altman temporarily changes his name to Ram Altman after backlash over computer memory

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman temporarily changed his X display name to Ram Altman following developer and enthusiast backlash over comments dismissing high-spec PC memory in favor of cloud utilization amid ongoing hardware shortages.

How the reactions started

It all started when Altman said on a podcast that having a lot of memory on home computers was unnecessary, arguing that it was better managed on remote systems. The stance sparked a backlash from tech enthusiasts and gamers who are struggling to cope with ongoing shortages and high prices for these components.

The name change and the responses on social media

Following the comments, X users responded with humorous posts, photos, and a fake fundraising page. In one of the images that circulated, computer memories were shown placed inside a trap, with Altman responding with a smile.

When a user asked him to change his name to "Ram Altman," he did so briefly. He later explained that he wanted people to have plenty of memory on their computers and claimed that his previous words had been taken out of context.

The public's doubts

Many critics have described the move as an attempt to improve the company's public image. As they pointed out, OpenAI is buying up a huge share of the total available memory worldwide, bringing back to the fore concerns about the broader impact of AI infrastructure.
