Satlyt tests converting satellites into data centers

Satlyt has completed a successful test for software designed to convert existing satellites into data processing networks.

Developed over 13 months, the test utilized a simulated network environment alongside a physical computer running in orbit under a NASA-funded research project with the University of Houston.

The test with NASA and the University of Houston

After 13 months of preparation, the company conducted a test in collaboration with the University of Houston as part of a NASA-funded research project. The space agency has not yet selected the technology for a specific mission.

The test used a simulated network with four computers, four users, and eight services. In practice, only one physical computer on an orbiting satellite ran the software, while the other three acted as simulations. The software is already on three orbiting satellites.

The results and the technical issue identified

The test demonstrated that the software can create task execution plans directly on hardware in space, but the company plans further tests on transferring information between multiple physical computers at the same time.

During testing, a problem was identified in the way delays were reported, as the software recorded the arrival time instead of the delay time.

Satlyt was founded in 2024 by Rama Apokilos, a former Google and SpaceX employee.
