SpaceX plans to attempt catching both stages of Starship during its 15th test flight, using launch tower arms to retrieve the upper section for the first time as part of its roadmap toward full rocket reusability.
The company plans to retrieve the upper section using the launch tower's arms, known as "sticks." SpaceX has used the same method before to retrieve the lower section, the Super Heavy booster. In the previous test, Flight 14, both sections fell into the ocean.
The company's ultimate goal is to make Starship fully and quickly reusable for future missions to the Moon and Mars. Until now, SpaceX had never attempted to catch the upper section, as it travels higher, farther, and faster than the lower section.
