Verizon CEO Dan Schulman has questioned the viability of SpaceX's Starlink Mobile network ambitions, estimating high costs and a multi-year timeline to build out 80,000 cell sites across the US.
SpaceX plans to offer mobile phone services through Starlink Mobile. Reports say the company wants to secure at least 80.000 base stations across the country. According to the head of Verizon, this venture will cost from 300 billion to half a trillion dollars over seven or eight years.
Schulman argued that even if this effort is completed, SpaceX would end up being the sixth largest provider in the US market, not the fourth. At the same time, he clarified that Verizon will not enter into a commercial partnership agreement with any satellite service provider.
Elon Musk responded online, saying the process would take two to three years. For its part, SpaceX plans to launch its Starlink Mobile service in early 2028, using a combination of next-generation satellites, cell towers and specialized equipment for broad coverage.
