Special security labels on smart home devices are being designed in the US

The FCC has published details on the upcoming US Cyber Trust Mark program for smart home devices, aiming for a 2027 product rollout.

The voluntary labeling framework requires manufacturers to disclose data collection types, security update timelines, and automatic update support, with mandatory three-year certification renewals.

How the new labels will work

The Federal Communications Commission has released a 47-page document seeking comments on the design of the program, which Commissioner Olivia Trustee has been tasked with overseeing. Under the plan, the labels would function similarly to nutrition labels, providing information such as the type of data a device collects, how often it provides security updates and whether updates are automatic.

Buyers will be able to scan a QR code or follow a link to see more details about the device's lab tests. Manufacturers will be required to renew certification every three years, while the committee will reserve the right to request extraordinary inspections of devices if necessary.

Management changes and market support

The program has undergone changes along the way, as the original organization chosen as lead administrator, UL Solutions, withdrew in January following a committee investigation into its business ties to China. In April, the committee selected the nonprofit ioXt Alliance as its replacement.
