Squarespace has confirmed layoffs impacting about 19% of its global workforce, affecting roughly 300 employees, as the platform shifts its focus amid the broader rise of automated web design and generative tools.
The layoffs were confirmed to TechCrunch by Jeff Seedman, a company spokesperson, who explained that the changes are being made to simplify operations, clarify priorities, and accelerate growth. The Verge originally reported the cuts.
Market changes and artificial intelligence
The way websites are built has been radically transformed by the rise of artificial intelligence tools, where users can create designs simply by typing in instructions. Competitors are making waves in the space, including Wix, which acquired Base44 for $80 million, and Lovable, which raised $400 million in funding at a valuation of $13,3 billion. At the same time, Google launched Stitch, a feature for quickly creating interface designs.
For its part, Squarespace launched an artificial intelligence tool called Blueprint in 2024 and announced a new corresponding platform called Forma.
The company's progress
Squarespace was founded in 2004, went public in 2021 at a $10 billion valuation, and became a private company again in 2024 through a $7 billion deal.
