Starlink has implemented optional passkey support, allowing users to authenticate via hardware keys, PINs, or biometric sensors like TouchID and FaceID.
The system, which complements existing password-based access, is designed so that biometric data is never transmitted to Starlink but remains stored locally.
Users can associate up to 10 passkeys per account, with support for storage in common providers including iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager, 1Password, and Bitwarden.
What changes in the connection
Passkeys are a way to sign in without typing your password. Instead of a password, your device verifies your identity through the method you already use to unlock it, such as your fingerprint, facial recognition, your device PIN, or an external digital security key.
What you need to know
- It is optional: Using them does not replace the traditional password. The old login method remains active and you can continue to use it.
- Data Security: Starlink does not access your biometric data. This data remains stored locally on your device.
- Management: You can add up to 10 different passkeys to your account. These can be stored on your device or in management services like iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager, 1Password, and Bitwarden.
This feature comes in addition to the two-factor authentication feature that Starlink has been offering since 2024.
