A Starlink user in the Netherlands reported receiving a copyright infringement notice within two days of torrenting a TV show, prompting discussions about how satellite internet providers handle copyright notices and user traffic compared to traditional European ISPs.
Sam Guichelaar posted on social media that he received a message from the Starlink service just two days after downloading an episode of the series Dexter: Resurrection. He expressed his surprise, stating that he has been downloading illegal material for 24 years without ever receiving a similar notice in Europe.
The attitude of providers and the use of connection hiding
According to Guichelaar, European internet providers usually reject such requests from entertainment companies, which is why he has never used a connection-anonymizing service, known as a VPN. However, his claim that local providers always deny data is not true. A Dutch copyright protection organization pointed out that there was a court decision in the past that obliged a local provider to provide notices and provide customer data.
The Starlink service, which is owned by the American company SpaceX, has been sending copyright warnings to users it suspects of illegally downloading content since 2021. Similar warnings have been reported by other users in Europe, which are sometimes sent too harshly or even by mistake.
The decision to change provider
Guichelaar said he doesn't like connection obfuscation services because they slow down internet traffic, disrupt other services, and can reveal activity in a momentary disconnect. However, he plans to use a VPN until his Starlink subscription expires in a month, at which point he plans to switch providers.
