Systemd officially adds Rust support while keeping core libraries in C and continuing to use Meson exclusively without Cargo, applying a no_std approach for architecture compatibility.
No to replacing existing code
The system's core libraries will remain written in the C language. There is no intention to rewrite the code that already works stably, as changing the language is not in itself a solution for system security.
Strict control of tools and libraries
The systemd team has decided not to use Cargo, the tool that usually comes with Rust to manage additional programs. Instead, the project will continue to rely solely on Meson, the system it has been using until now. With this decision, the creators want to keep the process simple and limit the risks that can arise from importing external libraries.
At this stage, the maintainers are expressing reservations about accepting external Rust libraries. To ensure that programs run properly, systemd will provide access to internal functions through its own tools.
Support is optional
The use of Rust in systemd will remain optional. This was deemed necessary as the language does not yet support all types of computers on which systemd is used. This will allow the system to remain compatible with older architectures that do not support the language.
