Tesla has replaced “Full Self-Driving” with “Tesla Assisted Driving” on some European websites.
Germany’s transport ministry said the former name could mislead because the driver must still supervise the system.
The case highlights how product naming can shape expectations around automated driving.
According to the ministry, the system does not drive the car itself. It assists with tasks such as acceleration and braking, but requires supervision from the driver.
Germany's Transport Minister Steffen Bilger said he discussed the authorities' concerns with Tesla in September and that they agreed to change the name. He also said he would support early approval for operation across Europe.
The newly named feature is already available in the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Croatia. Authorities in Sweden and Italy are investigating whether the name “Full Self-Driving” could confuse consumers and lead them to believe the car is driving without supervision. The name change could make it easier for Tesla to roll out the feature in other European countries.
