Tesla plans to start selling autonomous Cybercabs to customers by the end of 2026

Tesla announced plans to start selling Cybercabs to customers before the end of 2026.

Manufactured in Texas without steering wheels or brake pedals, the vehicles rely entirely on Full Self-Driving software, with unsupervised FSD activation targeted for around mid-2027.

During an earnings call, Lars Morawi, the company’s vice president of engineering, said the automaker aims to have the vehicles available to customers by the end of 2026. Morawi explained that production is already underway at the company’s Texas factory, but the vehicles being built now are intended for Tesla’s internal robo-taxis fleet. If the company does manage to start sales this year, quantities will initially be limited so it can learn from managing fleets in the hands of customers before moving to a wider rollout. Elon Musk, however, clarified that the vast majority of Cybercabs will remain in Tesla’s ownership for its ride-hailing services.

Who will be the first buyers?

Cybercabs was unveiled in 2024, and the company began offering rides through a dedicated app in Austin, Texas, in September 2026. The company is also initially looking for buyers who can help grow the robo-taxis network and purchase entire fleets of vehicles.

These vehicles have no steering wheel or brake pedal and rely solely on fully autonomous driving software. Because the unsupervised mode is not yet available to the public, the first cars sold cannot immediately join the shared-route network. The company's director of artificial intelligence, Ashok Elusuami, said that Tesla estimates that it can enable fully autonomous operation in some of the first customer vehicles around the second quarter of 2027.

The investigation by the security authorities

Shortly after Tesla began offering Cybercab rides in Austin, the U.S. Federal Highway Safety Authority launched an investigation. The agency said the company had self-certified that the vehicles complied with federal safety standards and plans to review the process and data used.
