Strata 1.0 is now available, marking the first stable release of the Rust-based, GTK4 file manager.

Designed for Linux environments like Omarchy, version 1.0 introduces session-restoring tabs, large directory optimizations, and sandboxed file previews using Bubblewrap.

Three display modes and keyboard control

Strata supports three different layouts for browsing files: icon view, traditional list view, and columns that allow for easy navigation into deeper folders.

For those who prefer not to use the mouse, navigation includes shortcuts inspired by the well-known Vim text editor, customizable shortcuts, and quick file search based on the letters of their name.

File previews and security

The program has a preview system that supports images, RAW photos, PDF files, text documents, source code, as well as audio and video files. For greater security, previews based on internal analysis tools are isolated using special containment mechanisms.

Additionally, the application supports common file operations, browsing and extracting from compressed archives, managing removable disks, and connecting to remote network locations via standard Linux protocols.

What version 1.0 brings and system requirements

This first stable release includes tabs with the ability to restore a previous session, improved mouse-based file transfer handling, and optimizations for folders with a large amount of content.

The developers' published metrics show satisfactory memory usage compared to other programs, although competitors are often faster at generating common preview images, and independent testing is needed. Strata 1.0 is available for Linux systems with x86_64 and AArch64 architectures. Out-of-the-box programs require newer versions of the core system libraries, while source code and installation instructions are available on the project's GitHub page.
